Mist and Mast is the new project created by Jason Lakis who had previously released three albums under the name The Red Thread (on the Badman Recording Co. label). This is a mostly one man project recorded by Jason with the exception of a couple of keyboard and guitar parts provided by others. Our first reaction to Mist and Mast…is that this music seems a good deal more focused than the last couple of Red Thread albums that we heard. And that is a good thing…because it means Jason is allowing his music to take him into new and different territories. This self-titled album features nine tracks of thoughtful, slightly odd progressive pop. The soft, subdued vocals work remarkably well within the framework of these intricately arranged tunes. This doesn’t sound like an album created to sell units…but rather an artistic creation in which Lakis is simply transferring his thoughts and feelings into music. Pensive, thoughtful cuts include “Turn Into the Turn,” “Campfire Went Out,” “Glass Tiles,” and “Price of Fevers.” Plenty of neat stuff here, it’ll be interesting to see where Jason heads with the next Mist and Mast release…

Carletta Sue Kay are equal parts Dolly Parton, Joanna Newsome and Emmylou Harris, coupled with the song writing styles of Stephin Merrit and Cole Porter. The music gravitates toward the sadder side of life, lamenting much, regretting more. Minimalist arrangements for piano, cello, guitar and bass accentuate the solemn, at times morbid, themes of life and death. If you enjoy a song or two about suicide, delusion, and/or extremely wet kissers, Carletta is your girl!

Hey Young Believer is a three-piece analog/digital indie rock band from SF. We use piano, guitar, synths, programmed loops and live drums to blast out energetic tunes.  We will play anywhere, preferably in SF, but you should ask.  We give away lots of free downloads and stickers.  We sell posters and CD’s, both online and at live shows. What a fun band! Hey Young Believer got started when Lilly and Alex met at Stanford in spring of 2006. Nick joined that winter.  Alex launches midi sequences using a foot controller hooked to a laptop.  Lilly plays a midi keyboard through Reason on a Mac.  Nick is a good drummer.

Koley O’Brien, Joseph Spargur, and Zachary Pingel sparing enough change to get by, piled their lives away in an old blue Astro van and charted their map for destination, California. Now, we’ve all heard this story before. Band moves to California and makes it big or goes home. But these small town Wisconsin boys share a different dream. 2009 has already set the tone for the year of change, and these boys are stepping up to plate and swinging away. Combining the basics of old school rock, like that of The Beach Boys and The Beatles, with the intricacies of the modern day indie scene such as the Shins and Death Cab for Cutie, comes A, B & the Sea. Now, for all those who laugh and cackle at the dream of a life on the road I think you’d be surprised. These boys are messing with the bull by the horns and throwing their red flag high to the bay’s windy skies. You can hear their voices some nights on the downtown streets of San Francisco singing for rent money. Their compassion for life drives them to work hard for their happiness. But we need your support. I think it was put best by “V” in the movie “V for Vendetta” when he said, “A revolution without dancing, is a revolution not worth having”. Let us dance together through these times of drought and bring on the revolution. Because the truth is, together, we are all, “The Underdog”.

Busty Cops

The Busty Cops were, and are once again, a local San Francisco acoustic comedy duo. Comprised of Jason King and Mike Pletcher, also known as Dog Boy, the band has just returned to the U.S. after a an unintended but very prosperous five years stint in Japan, to sign with Dick House Records. The Busty Cops and Dick House Records, sounds like a match made in heaven. Or jail. Combining elements of folk, punk, some singer-songwriter action and sloppy spoonful of raunch, they’ve lay claim to their own niche of rock and roll and drummed up a dedicated following in the process. But now, the prodigal band has returned, and it’s down to business.

Dan Weir is a songwriter hailing from West Chester, the garden spot of Chester County, PA. He is one of six boys and has a twin. Dan did his book learning in Pittsburgh, then moved to San Francisco. He lives there still with his lovely wife and their antic sons, Ross and Chandler.He writes and records with the powerpop/Americana outfit Town & Country, whose debut “My Blue Heaven” is available on iTunes, Amazon, etc. He also helms the studio project, Orphan Town.

Grand Lake is a bay area Art-Rock trio featuring Jameson Swanagon (guitar, loop station), John Pomeroy (Drums, Glockenspiel), and Caleb Nichols (bass, vocals). Descriptors such as ‘minimalist’, ‘dreamy’, and ‘atmospheric’ have been used to describe Grand Lake in the past.

The Poor Luckies are an up and coming band from the streets of San Francisco. They officially formed in 2008 when Danarchy (guitars/vocals) and Noah Balboa  (bass) met in the Tenderloin, also known as the gutter of San Francisco, and immediately began creating music. Resisting the temptation to simply play covers, they opted to only make original music. After striking common ground in their love for gritty punk rock, their lineup was completed when Bob Gnarley (drums) joined the outfit, rounding out the rhythm section.

Blue Sky Black Death is a production duo based in San Francisco, California and Seattle. The duo consists of Kingston and Young God. They are known principally for their hip hop and instrumental music, made with a mix of live instrumentation and sampling. Their name is a skydiving phrase alluding to beauty and death.

Often dressed in elaborate home-made outfits, these urban gringo mariachis have performed well over 800 live shows.  Included in that list are 2 European tours across the continent and numerous tours of the American West.  The band has held a weekly residency at the Park Chalet in San Francisco since July 2005 and continues to play every Tuesday night at the famous bar and restaurant.  DU has also become a frequent and popular act at private events such as weddings and corporate parties for large-scale clients including Macy’s, Quiksilver, Google, Microsoft and The Hilton Hotel.

In 2003 Company Car made it’s debut in the San Francisco Rock scene. Weekend began in a San Francisco suburb 12 years ago when Kevin Johnson and Shaun Durkan met at the far side of a 6th grade band classroom. The two couldn’t read music so they taught each other punk bass lines instead. Taylor Valentino was also a drummer in the same class who preferred Kurt Cobain to para diddles.

An upcoming San Francisco act, Honeybody Moonbee, has the ability to  silence rooms with her electrifying tales of life in the big city. The project is a brainchild of Upstate New York transplant and multimedia  artist Emily Ritz, who moved to San Francisco a few short years ago to pursue a degree at California College of the Arts. Her distinctive voice and ukulele playing have garnered comparisons to Joanna Newsom,  and recent performances have had captivated audiences with accompaniment from  women’s choruses, percussion, vibraphone, and cello. She will be performing at 7:00 pm sharp this Friday, July 31st, at the CD Release celebration of fellow San Francisco folk luminary Sonya Cotton.
